ABOUT STONINGTON & DEER ISLE |
|
Maine loyalists say the coast of Maine around Bay is the most beautiful part of the entire coast. The coastline curves around 35 miles of sparkling blue water set with hundreds of spruce-clad islands. One of the largest and loveliest is Deer Isle. The northern end of Deer Isle was connected by an impressive half-mile long suspension bridge to the mainland only 60 years ago and, for a long time afterwards, a hefty toll guaranteed the island's continued isolation. Nestled in the quaint village of Stonington on the southernmost tip of Deer Isle, the Inn on the Harbor enjoys a panoramic view of many islands, Isle au Haut and one of New England's largest fishing fleets. Unpretentious and refreshing in its natural beauty, Stonington offers to those who discover it a true down east experience. Occasionally, a first time visitor is a bit taken back by our Islanders attitude toward tourism. Make no mistake, our economy here is driven by the lobstering industry. Tourism is an ancillary industry that can not compare with the millions of dollars that lobstering, fishing, urchining, scalloping, clamming and musseling bring in. Many visitors tend to forget, as they wander down the middle of Main Street, that this is a working town. Our fishermen are not on vacation in the summer, it is the short season during which they make the majority of their annual income. So we welcome visitors who acknowledge that this Island is a jewel, a true hard working fishing island, with customs and a way of life that date back over a 100 years. |
